Halloween Sugar Cookies
Today I am going to give you a quick tutorial on how to make really cute, yet really simple cookies. I love sugar cookies that are covered in Royal icing and decorated to the nines, but have you ever tried to do that? It is not easy, and royal icing is definitely an aquired taste (in my opnion).
Here are the halloween cookies that I actually made one year ago TODAY. All you need is some buttercream (don't knock it until you try it), sugar cookie dough, and halloween cookie cutters. make your cookies and set them aside. Huge tip: make your cookies a day in advance. Your kitchen will THANK YOU. I am a total DISASTER when it comes to kitchen cleanliness. If you bake the cookies a day before, you can clean up before you make buttercream and dye that buttercream.
Make up your buttercream and divide it out into separate bowls. I used 4 bowls and the mixing bowl from the kitchen aid. If you plan to use white, just keep that icing in the mixing. bowl and save yourself a step. Remember when dying your buttercream let it set to get vibrant colors! Once I have everything mixed, I use Wilton round tips to create my designs. Here is what they look like:

How to hold a piping bag: I always hold my piping bag at either 45 or 65 degree angles. I am never working at 90 degrees because then you can't be right over the cookie, cake, etc.. You need space to see what you're making and I have also found I get a steady flow from the frosting that way. Also make sure you test your tip out by squeezing some of the frosting onto a paper towel or back into the bowl to make sure there's no air in your bag!
Okay Jenna but how did you come up with those designs? Easy, I kept it as SIMPLE as possible. I actually drew a lot of inspiration from simple halloween cards from Target. I wanted to use words as the base of the design and I feel like I succeeded in doing so.I used words because I like to think my handwriting is pretty good, so why not use words as the design?
Why buttercream? GUYS. Because it is DELICIOUS and There is something I like about the rough cake-y line that makes my mouth water!
So recap:
make your cookies, make your buttercream and dye it, put the buttercream in different piping bags and GO. keep it simple. and DO NOT be afraid to mess up. If you are striving for perfection, well.... good luck to you. You can also use Pinterest as a tool to find inspiration from. I use Pinterest a lot and smash together multiple ideas from there and my brain to create my works.
