This was a cake I made for my Assistant Manager, Joe and I's birthdays. Our birthdays are just a few days apart and at this time I was fairly new to the job, so I wanted to do something nice for the staff that was so welcoming to me when I started as well as help celebrate our birthdays.
The design comes from my artistic background. I wanted a cake that looked both painterly and sketchy. The roses and flowers are very similar to designs you would find on my ceramic artwork and in my paintings. I love watercolor cakes and watching the colors blend, but I also wanted for this cake to have that choppy rough paint look. The sprinkles act as an aid to help complete my vision for this cake!
Now recipe time.
I got the recipe for the cake from Mandy Merriman's cookbook, "Cake Confidence" which is a PERFECT book for beginner bakers as well as bakers who want to explore different flavor combinations! The frosting on the inside of the cake is the blueberry buttercream that she paired with her lemon poppy seed cake and the outside is her traditional white buttercream that I dyed a few different colors! You can also go to her blog: bakingwithblondie.com to find more info on the cake recipe!
